Canada is donating $2.5 million worth of personal protective equipment to help front-line health-care workers fighting the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The donation is in response to a call for help from the World Health Organization to assist in the global response.

The equipment includes items like masks, face shields, gloves and gowns:

  • N95 respirators - 500,000
  • Examination gloves - 1,500,000
  • Surgical gloves - 3,500
  • Hooded coverall suits - 50
  • Face shields - 2,100,000
  • Isolation gowns - 1,250,000

Ebola is spread through the bodily fluids of the infected, and more than 300 health-care workers have contracted the virus.

According to the WHO, the survival rate has been 47 per cent.
