Whitemud, Blackmud Creek homeowners warned about series of break-ins

Edmonton police are warning about a string of break-and-enters near Whitemud and Blackmud Creek ravines.

Seven break-and-enters at homes in Edmonton’s Whitemud and Blackmud Creek ravines are under investigation.

The burglars have mostly made off with jewelry and high-end clothing, Edmonton Police Service said on Tuesday.

The homes appear to have been targeted at random, but the thieves “almost exclusively” have broken in when no one was at home by smashing a rear window or door.

Investigators are looking for a silver GMC Terrain believed to be a 2024 to 2026 model, and a 2023-2026 Ford Escape that is possibly an ST edition, both of which were captured on security footage.

Police advise homeowners in these areas to:

• leave their inside lights on when leaving;
• refrain from posting about travel plans on social media;
• have someone check on the home while they are away, as well as do things like bring in the mail and shovel snow;
• install a home security system with motion and glass-break sensors and interior cameras;
• install motion-activated lights;
• place valuable items in a safe or hidden location; and
• keep the serial numbers and photos of valuables so they can be traced if stolen.
