A water main break in south Edmonton has shut down part of a road until Saturday as crews work to finish repairs. On Tuesday, Epcor crews were called to repair a water main break near 99 Street and 60 Avenue near a CPKC rail crossing. The break itself was repaired overnight, but 99 Street is closed in both directions between 60 and 62 Avenue while crews install a new valve in the area, Epcor said in a statement to CTV News Edmonton. The utility group added they expect the road to fully reopen by Saturday morning. Drivers can, in the meantime, detour along 51 Avenue and 63 Avenue. The release also explained that water main breaks are more common in winter and spring during temperature fluctuations. As the ground freezes or thaws, pipes are under greater pressure and can shift. “Signs of a break may include water coming up from the ground, a pool of water on the road that is not near a drain or catch basin, and steam rising off the water,” it read. Active water main breaks in the city can be checked on the Epcor website. A break that isn’t listed can be reported at 780-412-4500.
