St. Albert Art Gallery opening new exhibition

A new exhibition showcasing how human civilization has changed the Earth’s balance will debut Thursday at the Art Gallery of St. Albert.

The exhibit, which runs through Oct. 18, is called ‘Still the Grass Grows’ to highlight the beauty that still exists in the planet’s changed landscape.

Its artist, Heraa Khan, learned the art of masavari (traditional Indo-Persian miniature painting) at the National College of Art in Lahore, Pakistan, where she experienced extreme flooding. While studying for her Master of Fine Arts in British Columbia Okanagan Valley, she witnessed wildfires.

She lives in Edmonton now and experiences wildfire season every summer.

Khan’s pieces reflect what she has experienced and seen through art.

“Steadily, humans have built cities and communities that push away plants and wild animals,” said Emily Baker, the Art Gallery of St. Albert’s curator.

Despite the floods, fires and droughts, the exhibit suggests there is still potential to nurture nature.

“Within this urban world, nature is either controlled or regulated to smaller and smaller pockets of wild space,” Baker added.

Events for the exhibition include:

• In-person tour: Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m.
• Facebook live tour: Sept. 19 at 12 p.m.
• Artist-led workshop: Sept. 25 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
