Several new Target stores to open in Edmonton area Tuesday

West Edmonton Mall's Target is set to open May 7, 2013. Target is opening 24 stores across western Canada on Tuesday - including several in the Edmonton area.

The signs are up, the shelves are stocked and the stores are ready for shoppers.

Target has announced it is opening 22 stores in western Canada Tuesday morning – including three in Edmonton, one in St. Albert, one in Sherwood Park, one in Red Deer, one in Grande Prairie, and three in Calgary.

Brian Berg, Target’s senior vice president of stores, says Alberta shoppers will have access to products found in U.S. stores.

“It’s the exact same product, it’s the exact same partnership that we have in the United States,” he said during a media preview tour of a store Monday.

The department store will feature home goods, electrnics, clothing and food.

Some price points will also be on par with U.S. prices, though that parity won't apply across the board.

Berg says prices are meant to be competitive with the local market.

“We’re really excited at the pricing that we’re offering here in Canada,” he said.

“We not only competitively shop over 20,000 items on a regular basis to make sure that we’re absolutely priced right within the Edmonton market but in addition to that we have our price match guarantee where if a guest finds an item available at another retailer and they bring in the ad, we’ll match the price.”

Target opened 24 stores in Ontario in March, branching up to Canada after many years of success in the United States.

The company plans on opening a total of 124 stores across the country in 2013.

Wal-Mart tells CTV News it welcomes the competition and says it will continue its goal of offering low prices on products.

Unique to Canadian stores is a special line of Roots apparel - only for a limited time.

There will also be a local sports section with Oilers and Eskimos gear.

Edmonton’s Target locations opening Tuesday at 8 a.m. are at Mill Woods Town Centre, Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre and West Edmonton Mall.

A Kingsway Mall location is also set to open this winter.

Meanwhile officials say they have no plans on when or if online shopping for Target Canada will be made available.

Berg says right now the focus is opening physical stores.
