Tire blowout puts school bus in ditch on Yellowhead Trail

A school bus drove into the ditch off Yellowhead Trail with multiple passengers on board.

Emergency crews responded after a tire blowout put a school bus in the ditch on Friday afternoon.

A bus carrying St. Matthew Catholic Elementary students from a field trip went into the ditch on Yellowhead Trail near 50 Street around 3 p.m.

All 49 kids and seven staff members were safe, according to an Edmonton Catholic School Division spokesperson.

An Edmonton Police Service spokesperson says “a few youths” were taken to hospital as a precaution as a result of the crash but no injuries were reported to police.

The school board says four students went to the hospital as a precaution.

A new school bus was brought in to transport the uninjured passengers.

Westbound traffic was temporarily delayed as a result of the crash.
