Residential snow clearing on track to finish Friday night: city

The city says it expects all residential roadway snow clearing, which was accelerated over the weekend, to be finished by Friday.

A news release from the city said neighbourhood roadway clearing is now 75-per-cent done, meaning the citywide Phase 2 residential parking ban is on track to end by Friday at 7 p.m.

The parking ban has been jumping neighbourhood to neighbourhood since the morning of Jan. 12 as crews worked to clear a historic dump of snow in the city from late December.

Crews are now also working on windrow removal, spot sanding and travel lane maintenance.

Alleys and school zones will also get more attention as residential areas are cleaned up. The city will focus on culs-de-sac as equipment becomes available from neighbourhood removal.

Until announced otherwise, the Phase 2 parking ban is still 24 hours a day ongoing until a neighbourhood is cleared.

The city said parked vehicles are still one of the “most significant obstacles” for plows and other equipment. Leaving a car on the road while crews are out means risking windrows being placed around the car.

“If too many vehicles remain on residential roads, areas may be rescheduled or skipped in order to maintain service level for all other areas,” the release added.

While the forecast is predicting snow, the city expects it to be a minimal dusting and says graders will continue residential road clearing until it’s finished.

Residents can look up whether their neighbourhood is scheduled for snow removal on the City of Edmonton website.
