Red Deer Polytechnic launches new bursary for students facing financial barriers

Students from the central Alberta region who are interested in pursuing Red Deer Polytechnic for their post-secondary education now have the opportunity to face fewer financial barriers.

Eleven bursaries valued at $5,000 each will be up for grabs for students entering the first year of any program.

The awards are through a $1.5-million endowment by The Joyce Family Foundation.

“We are extremely grateful to receive this endowment gift to create The Joyce Family Foundation Bursary,” said Patrick Machacek, the vice president of development and partnerships with Red Deer Polytechnic, in a press release Tuesday.

“These funds will help eliminate financial barriers and ensure that more students can continue to access post-secondary education, participating in job-ready education, training and applied research opportunities while attending RDP, and contributing to Alberta’s skilled workforce after graduating.”

The bursaries are renewable for the duration of the student’s program. Each student would have to maintain good academic standing, demonstrate continued financial need and engage in ongoing mentorship throughout their studies.

Red Deer Polytechnic states the criteria of the bursary is that funds will be awarded only to Canadian citizens who are full-time students beginning their first post-secondary program and who have demonstrated perseverance in overcoming personal challenges.

“This bursary program reflects Ron Joyce’s lifelong commitment to giving young people a chance to pursue their dreams,” added Rob MacIsaac, Chair of the Joyce Family Foundation. “We’re proud to continue that legacy by helping students advance their education at Red Deer Polytechnic, knowing that their dedication and promise are being recognized and supported.”

Red Deer Polytechnic offers more than $2-million in student awards and scholarships annually.
