The chief of the Durham Regional Police Service has confirmed that one of its recruits was killed and another seriously injured in a crash near Aylmer, Ont. In a statement, Chief Peter Moreira said the pair were travelling to training at the Ontario Police College (OPC) when the collision occurred. OPP were called to the intersection of Imperial Road and College Line, just a few kilometres west of the OPC, shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Investigators discovered that a small sedan and a transport truck had collided in the intersection. Both vehicles ended up in the ditch on either side of Imperial Road. “Unfortunately, one person was pronounced deceased at the scene, and one was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer, he is uninjured,” said Const. Jeff Beaumaster of the Elgin OPP. Chief Moreira stated the thoughts of his service are with the families of both recruits in the wake of the “unimaginable tragedy.” Imperial Road was closed from Ron McNeil Line to Glencolin Line, and College Line was closed from Rogers Road to Hacienda Road while police investigated the incident. All roadways reopened shortly after 8 p.m.
