Power outage in central Edmonton blamed on equipment failure

Early Friday afternoon, EPCOR crews were called out to deal with power outages in central Edmonton – about an hour later, officials said power had been restored.

Just before 2 p.m., reports of power outages started showing up online – and EPCOR said crews had been called to handle a power outage in central Edmonton.

The outage impacted traffic lights in downtown Edmonton.

By about 3 p.m., EPCOR said power should have been restored to all customers – although at that point it might’ve taken some time for power to come back for some customers, and for some traffic lights to come back on line.

The outage affected about 5,000 customers on both sides of the river – the outage has been blamed on equipment failure, but the spokesperson couldn’t say whether it was heat related.
