Alberta's measles outbreak is showing no signs of slowing down, and doctors and infectious disease experts say the situation is now critical.

The province is warning the public of a potential measles exposure in Edmonton.

People who were at the Edmonton Sports Centre on Feb. 8 between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. or Axe Monkeys between 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on the same day, may have been exposed to the highly infectious disease.

Anyone who was at either location at the specified times who was born in or after 1970 and has fewer than two documented doses of measles-containing vaccine, or who has never had measles, may be at risk for developing the disease.

Symptoms of measles include a fever of 38.3 C or higher; cough, runny nose or red eyes; and a rash that appears three to seven days after a fever starts, usually starting behind the ears and face and spreading down the body.

If symptoms of measles develop, people are asked to stay home and call the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434 before visiting any healthcare facility or provider.

The measles vaccine is highly effective at preventing infection and complications and is freely available to all Albertans.

If you think you have been exposed and are not vaccinated, you may be able to receive immunization to reduce the risk of infection. A dose vaccine needs to be given within 72 hours of exposure.

Babies under the age of one, people with severely weakened immune systems and those who are pregnant may be able to receive immunoglobulin within six days of exposure to prevent the disease.
