Person with measles was on Air Canada flight from Toronto to Edmonton: AHS

Alberta Health Services says there was a potential measles exposure on flight 173 from the Toronto Pearson airport at 3:45 p.m. on Sept. 10.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is issuing an advisory after a person with measles flew from Toronto to Edmonton last week.

The health authority said those who were in the following locations during the specified dates and times may have been exposed to the highly infectious disease:

• Location: Air Canada flight #173
• Exposure time period: Sept. 10, flight departed 3:44 p.m. (MDT) from Gate D31, Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) arriving at Edmonton International Airport (YEG) Gate D62 at 7:30 p.m. (MDT).
• Location: Edmonton International Airport (YEG), domestic terminal, Gate D62 and baggage claim area.
• Exposure time period: Sept. 10 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. (MDT).

Anyone who was at these locations during the specified times, who was born in or after 1970 who has fewer than two documented doses of the measles vaccine, may be at risk of developing the disease, AHS says.

Symptoms of measles include a fever of 38.3 C or higher, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that appears three to seven days after the fever starts, typically starting behind the ears and on the face.

AHS says people on the flight and at the gates are asked to monitor for symptoms of measles and are strongly encouraged to review their immunization records.

It says complications of measles can include ear infections, pneumonia, inflammation of the brains, premature delivery, and rarely, death. Those who are pregnant, less than five-years-old, or have weakened immune systems are at a greater risk of developing serious complications.

If symptoms do develop, people are asked to stay at home and call the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434 before visiting any health care facility or providers, including a family physician or pharmacy.

Albertans can access free measles vaccines through the province’s publicly funded immunization program.

As of Monday, there have been seven new cases of measles reported, three of which are in Edmonton, according to the province’s website.

There have been 1,890 cases of measles reported since March 2025.
