Overpass struck by excavator had just undergone $2.3M in repairs after similar incident

The province says repairs were just completed on an overpass that was struck by an excavator on Thursday.

The excavator, which was loaded on the back of a vehicle, struck the underside of the overpass at Whitemud Drive and Anthony Henday Drive northbound on Thursday afternoon.

“This is not the first time this structure has been damaged in this manner,” Brandon Aboultaif, the press secretary for the minister of Service Alberta wrote to CTV News Edmonton in an email on Friday.

“In June 2023, the same overpass was struck, requiring repairs that were completed earlier this year at a cost of $2.3 million.”

Aboultaif says all Alberta bridges have height signage posted and it’s the responsibility of drivers to ensure loads are properly secured and do not exceed posted height limits.

He added an inspection of the overpass is currently underway with engineers trying to determine the extent of the damage.

“Repair options will include cost estimates and a potential project timeline,” he said.

Strathcona County Mayor Rod Frank also commented on the crash on Friday.

“We recognize how frustrating this situation is for commuters, especially with it recurring at the same location,” he wrote in an email. ”That’s why we’re continuing to advocate to the province for long-term solutions that enhance safety and minimize disruption for everyone who relies on this route.”

The driver of the vehicle hauling the excavator received tickets from the county, RCMP said.

No injuries were reported.
