Ottawa provides $34M in low-interest loans for infill rental housing development in Mill Woods

New rental homes designed to be an inclusive and accessible living environment are slated to rise in north Mill Woods, with help from federal government affordable housing funds.

Ottawa announced it is supplying more than $34 million in low-interest loans to build 130 secure rental homes in the south-side neighbourhood.

The project includes two four-storey buildings that will rise on the former Tweddle Place retail complex on the northwest corner of Millbourne Road and 76 Street.

Eleanor Olszewski, the MP for Edmonton Centre and minister of emergency management and community resilience and minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada, announced the funding on behalf of the federal housing ministry Friday at the development site alongside Raj Dhunna, the chief operating officer of project developer Regency Developments.

The complex, which will also be called Tweddle Place, will include commercial space that can be used for child-care centres. About 80 per cent of the units will offer two bedrooms, with ground-floor units offering access from grade level to accommodate everyone regardless of mobility challenges.

The loans come through the $55-billion federal Apartment Construction Loan program, which aims to help 131,000 new rental homes get built across Canada by 2032. As of September, more than 71,400 homes have been built across the country with loans through the program.

In a statement to CTV News Edmonton, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said construction of Tweddle Place is expected to be completed by April 2028, and that all 130 units will have rents at or below 30 per cent of the city’s median household income.
