Oilers’ McDavid named NHL 1st star of week for 10-points-in-4-games effort

He’s already a star, but Connor McDavid was so otherworldly over the last seven days, the National Hockey League couldn’t help but take even more notice than usual.

The Edmonton Oilers captain recorded 10 points last week, scoring four goals and six assists as his team went 2-1-1, earning him weekly ‘first star’ honours on Monday from the NHL.

The league names its ‘three stars’ each week of the regular season.

McDavid’s output from Dec. 8-14 included a four-assist effort in the Oilers’ 4-1 win on Thursday over the Detroit Red Wings and a three-point outing (two goals, one assist) on Saturday in beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-3. The 28-year-old also scored twice as the Oilers came back to tie their game against the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday only to lose 4-3 in overtime.

It’s the first time this season an Oilers player has received a weekly nod.

McDavid, with 18 goals and a league-leading 34 assists for 52 points, sits second to the Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon (26 goals, 29 assists for 55 points) in the NHL scoring race.

Rounding out this week’s honoured trio are Red Wings goalie John Gibson, who scored two shutouts in the three wins for which he was in net, and Minnesota Wild centre Joel Eriksson Ek, who scored three goals and four assists for seven points in his team’s four games, all victories.

Skinner, Kulak join Penguins

Goalie Stuart Skinner and defenceman Brett Kulak are finally on their new team’s roster.

The Pittsburgh Penguins added the duo to their active roster on Monday, a day before they host their former team, the Oilers.

Pittsburgh acquired Skinner, Kulak and a second-round draft pick in 2029 from Edmonton on Friday in a trade for goalie Tristan Jarry and forward Samuel Poulin.

The Penguins told CTV News Edmonton on Monday morning both Skinner and Kulak, both Edmonton-area natives, are “all good with their immigration” and are expected to be available for Tuesday’s game.

Hutson recalled from Bakersfield

The rookie pro is getting an NHL shot.

The Oilers called up forward Quinn Hutson from the Bakersfield Condors, their American Hockey League affiliate, on Monday.

The 23-year American, who signed a two-year contract with the Oilers in April after finishing his U.S. college career with Boston University, leads the Condors, and all AHL rookies, with 16 goals and 28 points, good for fourth in league scoring.

Hutson’s younger brother Lane, a Montreal Canadiens defenceman, won the Calder Trophy last season as the NHL’s top rookie.
