Man expected to survive after being shot multiple times by RCMP: police watchdog

ASIRT says a man who was shot by four RCMP officers after arriving at the Strathcona Country RCMP detachment with what appeared to be a gun will survive.

Alberta’s police watchdog said a man is expected to survive after being shot multiple times by RCMP in Sherwood Park last week.

A statement from Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said an RCMP officer saw a man in the secure parking lot of the Strathcona County detachment on July 28 around 10:30 a.m.

The officer believed the man had a firearm and notified other officers.

The man was met by several officers who attempted to provide verbal direction to the man. Four Mounties discharged their firearms, striking the man multiple times.

First aid was administered until EMS arrived and transported the man to hospital with serious injuries.

ASIRT said he remains in hospital but is expected to survive. No officers were injured.

A photo shared by ASIRT shows a BB gun that was recovered at the scene.

The police watchdog’s investigation will examine the use of force. No further information will be released until the investigation is complete.
