To celebrate 50 years of MacEwan Athletics, the Griffins logo will look a little different. The university announced a “sleek reimagining” of the Griffin as it enters the next half-century of competition. “Welcome to the new era of Griffins Athletics,” said athletics director Joel Mrak. “This new logo pays homage to all of our former looks with a modern and timeless style.” In 1974, MacEwan joined the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). One year later, the department of athletics adopted the Griffin as its mascot. Now, a part of a Canada-wide league called U Sports, Griffins Athletics competes in hockey, soccer, volleyball and basketball. During MacEwan’s time competing in university sport leagues, the logo has seen several changes. The new logo reflects what they hope to be the Griffins next era of excellence, the university said.
