‘Known for his kindness’: Man who died in Henday crash remembered

The man killed in a crash on Anthony Henday Drive was a security screener at the Edmonton International Airport.

A 27-year-old man who died in a crash on Anthony Henday Drive in southwest Edmonton Monday is being remembered for his kindness and professionalism.

Ahmed Ali had worked as a security screener at the Edmonton International Airport since 2023.

“(Ali) was widely respected for his kindness, professionalism and commitment to his coworkers,” said a statement from the Canadian Airport Workers Union (CAWU). “He was a valued member of our workplace and our union family, and his loss is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.”

The union has organized a GoFundMe campaign to help ease the financial burden Ali’s family is facing as a result of his death. Donations have already exceeded $25,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.

Police were on the scene of a crash Monday at 8:30 a.m. on the Henday eastbound near Heritage Valley Trail.

It was reported that a Volkswagen Passat had broken down in the far right lane when it was struck from behind by a Dodge Ram pickup truck driven at highway speeds by a 23-year-old man.

Ali was inside the Volkswagen when it was hit, and he died at the scene.

“Ali will be remembered for his compassion, his collegial spirit, and the respect he showed to everyone he worked with,” said CAWU. “He will not be forgotten.”
