Edmonton weather: Cooler and cloudy, but the steadier rain stays south

It's clearing later on Monday and there are seasonal days to follow.

A long and broad band of showers and heavy rain stretches from Grande Cache southeast through Red Deer and from Calgary to Medicine Hat this morning.

That rain continues to push southeast with the northern edge just grazing the southern part of the Edmonton region and then moving further south of the city as the morning wears on.

Rainfall Warnings remain in effect for Calgary and areas to the west and south.

For the Edmonton region, we’ll stay cloudy through the morning and then get some sunny breaks midday and this afternoon.

There’s a slight risk of a spotty shower in the area this afternoon, but most of the city should stay dry.

Temperatures will top out around 20 C or 21 C this afternoon.

Parts of the city may be noticing a smoky smell in the air as a band of wildfire smoke appears to be drifting through the region this morning.

Smoke from Saskatchewan pushed into the Cold Lake area and an air quality advisory is in effect for that region this morning.

It appears some of that wildfire smoke has bumped air quality readings in the “moderate risk” range around parts of Edmonton this morning.

Air quality should improve this afternoon and Tuesday looks smoke-free.

HOWEVER...the smoke models have some thick wildfire smoke pushing into southern AB today (from the SK fires) and there’s a chance that we’ll see some of that smoke push into the Edmonton area on Wednesday as the wind shifts to a more southerly direction.

Daytime highs will remain in the low 20s through the week.

In fact, looking all the way out to the middle of next week, there’s really not much chance of “heat.”

There might be one or two days that get to the mid 20s. But, not much chance of seeing any days with afternoons in the 27 to 30 degree range.
