Edmonton weather: 1 more day in the 20s ahead of the Thanksgiving chill

Tuesday will be the warmest day of the week in Edmonton, according to Cory Edel's forecast.

There’s a big cool down coming for the Thanksgiving long weekend.

But, there are a few more warmer days ahead of the weekend and one more day in the 20s today.

A short-lived upper ridge ripples across the province today and a developing surface low pressure system in the northwest will help boost temperatures into the low 20s in Edmonton and across much of central and eastern Alberta today.

Cloudier, a chance of some showers and mid-teens for the northwestern part of the province.

The key phrase there is “short-lived.” This’ll be a one-and-done for the Edmonton area because the cold front trailing that low-pressure system will sweep through late tonight.

We’ll have some showers along that cold front (just a slight chance for Edmonton) and some gusty wind. Gusts could be in the 50-60 km/h range overnight.

Behind the cold front, temperatures drop back to the 12 C range for Wednesday.

There’s a mini warming trend Thursday/Friday as daytime highs climb back into the mid-to-upper teens (frosty Thursday morning though).

The big story is the arrival of some significantly cooler air through the long weekend as an upper trough develops and some arctic air starts to spill south.

There’s still some uncertainty with exactly how cool it’ll get. But...here’s what I’m thinking:

• Saturday: high in the 8-12 C range and a chance of showers, possibly turning to some wet snow Saturday evening/night.
• Sunday: high in the 2-6 C range.
• Monday: high in the 6-10 C range.
• Wind will probably be an issue Saturday/Sunday with gusts in the 40-50 km/h range.

The long weekend chill won’t last for long. Daytime highs get back to the 10-15 C range for Tuesday-Friday next week.
