An arcade bar chain is shuttering its downtown Edmonton location next weekend. Greta Bar YEG says it plans to close its 109 Street location on July 26 due to “the ongoing challenges of operating in downtown Edmonton,” owners said in a social media post. The bar, which also has locations in Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto and Winnipeg, did not say what those operational challenges were. It first opened in Edmonton in 2019 and closed temporarily during COVID-19. The location is home to more than 50 arcade games, craft cocktails and street food. Greta will have $3.50 happy hour drinks running all week up until its final Sunday. On July 26, it plans to host a final hurrah. The bar joins a few other businesses in the downtown core whose owners have cited varying operational difficulties in recent months. Khazana, an Indian restaurant on 107 Street, announced its permanent closure last month. Similarly, the Arts District’s Playwright restaurant inside the Citadel Theatre announced it was closing at the end of June.
