Charges pending after ‘reckless’ vehicle thefts, flight from police east of Edmonton: RCMP

An Edmonton man faces charges after allegedly stealing three vehicles in one night, running from police and eventually being caught by the RCMP K-9 unit in rural Strathcona County.

On Wednesday around 2:20 p.m., officers responded to calls of a vehicle with an attached trailer driving through fences around Township Road 512 and Range Road 214.

En route to that scene, they received another call from a residence about a second vehicle stolen from their yard. The suspect eventually stole a third vehicle, police said in a news release.

Police said they were able to locate the vehicle after the man allegedly drove through more fences to get away. The man ultimately left the vehicle behind and ran.

The RCMP K-9 unit located the suspect, who was arrested on scene. The man now faces multiple charges that police say are currently pending.

“Stolen vehicles are being used to commit serious crimes and evade police, often at high speed with no regard for public safety,” said Insp. Kevin Peterson with Strathcona RCMP in the release.

Officers said anyone can and should report suspicious activity to the police by calling 911 or using Crime Stoppers for anonymous tips.
