Sunday marks 17 years since the murder of Tanya Jean Brooks, a Mi’kmaq woman and mother of five. Halifax Regional Police is continuing the investigation into her death, according to a news release Friday. Brooks’ body was found in a basement window well along the west side of the former St. Patrick’s-Alexandra School on Maitland Street in Halifax at 2:17 p.m. on May 11, 2009. Investigators have been able to track her movements until around 9 p.m. on May 10, the night before her body was found. Investigators believe Brooks, who was 36 at the time, knew the person or people who killed her. Officers encourage anyone who may have witnessed anything near the school around that time to contact police at 902-490-5020. “It is never too late to come forward and the smallest piece of information may be just what is needed to progress the investigation,” reads the news release. Brooks’ homicide is a part of the Nova Scotia Justice Department’s Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program, which offers up to $150,000 for information leading to arrests and convictions in certain cases.
