Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre wants to generate some buzz about the hard workers it’s hosting on its roof. The mall is home to thousands of bees – Italian species Apis mellifera – in urban beehives. On Thursday, the company that looks after the bees, Alvéole, stopped by to answer people’s questions and bring awareness to the natural pollinators’ environmental importance. They also brought jars of honey as a sweet bonus. Beekeeper Faiz Hanafi says a lot of people are surprised when they find out the mall has some special tenants. “It just lets people know that we’re doing something for the environment. We’re bringing nature into your area. It lets people get excited for something,” he said. Bonnie Doon Mall says the honey harvested is given out to tenants and used to support the community.
