Albertans celebrate 100 years of Black History in the Legislature rotunda

A celebration of Black history Month was held at the Alberta legislature Thursday, with performances and speakers sharing personal experiences.

“Let’s operate like neighbours, not like someone in a condo apartment.”

That’s the message from co-founder and Chief Inclusion Officer of the Nod Movement, Levar Saul, who attended the Legislative Assembly of Alberta’s Black History Month celebration on Thursday.

“For me, it’s always about my children. They were born in Alberta, my wife and I were immigrants to Canada and we spent more than half of our lives in Canada, so we’re just dedicated to making it a better place for them.”

Saul was among many Albertans who recognized the month in the legislature rotunda. The event was open to anyone who wanted to attend and included remarks by special guests Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Salma Lakhani, MLA Brandon Lunty on behalf of the Premier of Alberta, and MLA Sharif Haji.

Albertans also witnessed live performances from Nehoreka Marimba Power, spoken word artist Titilope Sonuga, and singers Rhi-Onna Carey, Samara Belhomme and Donesha Cooper.

Saul believes it’s important to show children a better and brighter future by showing his own kids the work that goes into being active citizens. His daughter, Leah, is a Stollery Mighty Millions ambassador. His son, Noah, does work under the Alberta Human Rights Campaign as a baby model.

“Teaching them how to volunteer, showing up in spaces where they’re uncomfortable, showing up in places that they feel comfortable, and always leaving an impact,” added Saul. “Doing whatever they can to make an impact by listening, actively participating, voicing their opinions and being proud of where they’re from.”

This year’s theme is 100 Years of Black History Commemorations.

“Let’s find that connection because we’re all in this together. That was a key message I wanted to get across for us to have a fully enriched Alberta and Canada.”
