1 dead in Grande Prairie bus crash, road conditions believed to be factor

Police say a person is dead after a charter bus carrying 37 people, including children and adults, crashed near Grande Prairie Saturday night.

The single-vehicle crash occurred on Highway 43, about one kilometre west of the town of Debolt just before 10:30 p.m.

A 50-year-old woman from Grande Prairie was declared dead at the scene.

Another bus transported 16 injured passengers to hospital who were triaged for minor injuries and have since been released.

Six were taken to hospital by ambulance in serious condition. Their current conditions are not known, say police.

The crash is still under investigation, but initial investigation found that the bus hit the median and rolled over once, coming back onto its wheels. Road conditions are believed to be a factor.
