Brampton, Ont. teen's music featured on new Jay-Z album

A teenager from Brampton, Ont. got some big news this week: a beat she wrote and produced is included in a track on the latest album by hip-hop mogul Jay-Z.

Ebony Oshunrinde, 16, has been producing music since she was nine, and says she got serious about it when she was 11 -- between school, homework, and the other typical activities that occupy the life of a young girl, of course.

But Oshunrinde’s career and future seem to have hit a new trajectory with the news her beat, or instrumental backing track, is the basis for the song “Crown,” on pop star Jay-Z’s highly-anticipated record Magna Carta Holy Grail.

Oshunrinde, who also goes by the stage name WondaGurl, had sent a beat that she liked to Travis Scott, a U.S. producer she had worked with in the past. Scott was working with Jay-Z, unbeknownst to her.

Scott played the track for Jay-Z, who decided to put it on his album.

“I listened to it last night in the studio, and I honestly felt like crying,” Oshunrinde told The Globe and Mail. “It was a big moment in my life.”

Since then, accolades have been pouring in for the self-taught, Brampton-based teen who still lives at home with her mother and her rule that school work always comes first.

In one tweet from her @WondaGurlBeats account, Oshunrinde expressed gratitude for all the love she has been receiving.

"I'm glad you guys like #Crown the love and support is overwhelming!" she wrote, in response to dozens of messages of congratulations.
