April Fool's, eh? The best pranks in Canada

The SkyDome went back to its original name, Thomas Mulcair shaved his beard and Wolverine's journals turned up in the federal archives, as Canadians indulged in some clever practical jokes for April Fool's Day.

Here's a look at some of the biggest pranks that emerged in Canada on April 1, 2016.

Canada's Weapon X revealed

Library and Archives Canada announced Friday that it has obtained the declassified journals of one of the longest-serving (and oldest) soldiers in Canadian history – a man named James "Logan" Howlett, a.k.a. Wolverine of the X-Men.

According to the journals, Howlett was born in 1882 in Cold Lake, Alta., and worked as a fur trader and miner, before serving the Canadian government in both World Wars and the Cold War. He later changed his name to Wolverine and went on to work with "various NGOs," LAC said.

"His military career spanned multiple conflicts, making his personnel records an unprecedented study in Canadian military history," Library and Archives Canada said in a statement on its website. "Logan was gravely wounded in action many times, and gained a reputation as a gritty survivor."

WestJet eliminates food carts

WestJet announced early Friday that it will be doing away with food and beverage carts on its aircraft, and replacing them with a food delivery robot called "RALFH." In a promotional video announcing the "new" innovation, a WestJet spokesperson touts RALFH (Robotic Automated Light Food Handler) as the next big thing in air travel. However, the whole presentation falls apart about halfway through the video, when the talking RALFH robot starts saying morose things like: "I forgot to give Cheryl in Seat 3A her Cobb salad. I feel like a failure."

The spokesperson then acknowledges RALFH as an April Fool's Day prank.

Election insurance

Esurance offered Americans tongue-in-cheek peace of mind for April Fool's Day, with an ad for what it calls "Election Insurance." In a video ad, the company says it will take care of clients' homes in the United States, in the event they move to Canada because the U.S. election doesn't turn out as they'd like.

"Now, more than ever, it's important to have a smart policy that protects your home, in the event that you decide to abandon it for the next four years," actor John Krasinsky says in a voiceover for the video.

Pricey stay in Ottawa

Interim Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose used April Fool's to poke fun at the Liberals, by pretending to post the residence of the Official Opposition on Airbnb. "To help out the taxpayers of Canada, I'm going to be listing Stornoway on Airbnb to help pay off the deficit," Ambrose says in a video posted to Twitter.

The interim rental is available for only $29.4 billion a night, according to Ambrose's Facebook page.

Clean-shaven Mulcair

By Zeus' beard, did NDP Leader Tom Mulcair actually shave?

The grey-whiskered politician teased a dramatic change to his image on Friday, with a photo showing his face all lathered up for a good shave. Mulcair can be seen holding a straight razor close to his bearded face, while standing in what appears to be in a bathroom.

On Twitter, the photo is accompanied by the hashtag "YOLO" (you only live once).

SkyDome returns

The name "SkyDome" was trending on Twitter in Toronto Friday morning, amid unconfirmed reports that the home of the Toronto Blue Jays would be reverting to its original name, instead of being called the Rogers Centre. The suggestion sparked passionate outcry from many fans, who said it would be a "cruel joke" if the rumour turned out to be an April Fool's Day prank.

Built in 1989, the facility was originally called the SkyDome, before it was renamed the Rogers Centre in 2005.

Oilers moving ice

With the Edmonton Oilers preparing to move to the brand new Rogers Place next season, the team claimed on Friday that the actual ice surface will be moving along with it.

The Oilers posted a three-minute video on Twitter, in which arena operations employees offer a complicated explanation for how they plan to move the ice from Rexall Place over to Rogers Arena. The supposed move involves lasers, suction cups and a cold storage warehouse.
