City officials say work to replace the beleaguered Bearspaw South feeder main is progressing on time – with a shutdown of the pipe still expected in October. The City of Calgary gave an update on Wednesday, saying the first phase of the replacement – microtunneling and installation of the concrete carrier pipe – is now complete. Darren Finney, the City of Calgary’s manager of major projects, says the completion is a “significant step forward” for the project. “This complex work involved tunneling beneath major infrastructure, minimizing impacts on the community,” he said. “With the concrete carrier pipe now in place, we will continue installing the new steel feeder main, preparing for the critical system connection work planned for the fall.” Construction on Stage A of the project began in January. Work on Stage B, which includes construction along 34 Avenue N.W. in Bowness, began in June and is also on schedule. In mid-October, the Bearspaw South Feeder Main will need to be shut down to connect the new feeder main to the existing water system.
