WestJet has announced it will be ceasing its year-round non-stop service from Calgary to Lethbridge and Calgary to Medicine Hat. The airline issued the notice on Tuesday, saying the last flight on both routes will be June 24. In a statement, the company said decisions like these are “never taken lightly.” “We understand this is disappointing news for the two communities and apologize for the impact this may have,” officials said. “The WestJet Group has served these routes for several years, and despite efforts to support viability, demand for the services has been insufficient.” The City of Lethbridge says the announcement will prompt new discussions at future council meetings, especially since airport incentives were already on the agenda. “We will provide an update to the community once council has had the opportunity to discuss and provide direction,” the city said in a statement on Tuesday. CTV News has also reached out to the City of Medicine Hat for comment. According to the airline’s website, flights between Calgary (YYC) and Lethbridge (YQL) take about 56 minutes. Flights between Calgary and Medicine Hat (YXH) are one hour and six minutes. The typical driving distance from Calgary is two hours and 10 minutes to Lethbridge and two hours and 55 minutes to Medicine Hat. WestJet said any guests holding reservations for June 25 and beyond are being notified about their options for a refund.
