The B.C. SPCA is fundraising to help cover the cost of removing hundreds of porcupine quills from a dog’s face and body. The pup, named Bo, was recently surrendered by a family in the northwestern part of the province who rushed him to an emergency veterinarian after his encounter with the porcupine, a spokesperson for the charity said. “Similar to many pet owners in this economy, medical bills were beyond this family’s ability and they made the difficult decision to rehome Bo,” the spokesperson told CTV News in an email. The 200 quills left the dog in a “tremendous amount of pain” and had to be removed one by one while Bo was sedated, the B.C. SPCA said. “Despite his painful ordeal, Bo is a gentle old soul. He loves relaxing indoors, happily keeps his people company, and enjoys gentle pets and quiet time together,” an online fundraising appeal said. Injuries to dogs from porcupine quills are fairly common, the statement from the animal welfare organization said, adding porcupines have roughly 30,000 quills. The fundraiser for Bo’s treatment has a goal of $1,217.
