A 59-year-old man has been charged with several weapons-related offences after 30-40 shots were fired last week inside a residence in North Bay. Police also seized 13 guns, seven air guns, a crossbow, a 3D-printed handgun receiver and slide, along with more than 10,500 rounds of ammunition. The incident began around 9:45 p.m. July 31 when police received a report of shots fired at a residence on Cedar Heights Road. “Officers quickly contained the area, and the accused surrendered to responding officers shortly after 10 p.m.,” police said in a news release Aug. 6. Fired 30-40 rounds “The accused was taken into custody without further incident.” An investigation revealed “that an estimated 30 to 40 rounds had been fired inside the residence,” police said. “The accused is believed to be the only person involved in the incident.” Police obtained a warrant and a search of the residence Aug. 1 uncovered the weapons and ammunition. “Investigators also recovered numerous spent cartridges and spent shotgun shells,” police said. The North Bay man has been charged with careless use of a firearm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and recklessly shooting a firearm. “The response of the officers who attended this incident should be applauded,” acting deputy chief Jeff Warner said in the release. “They rapidly deployed to an active gunfire situation and, through effective communication and the use of de-escalation tactics, were able to safely resolve a very dangerous situation. We are very grateful that no one was injured. This outcome reflects the training, preparedness, and courage of our members to protect the safety of our community.” The accused was released on bail with a court date of Sept. 1.
