Voters head to the polls in Calgary for election day

It's election day in Canada, so millions of Canadians will head to the polls to cast their ballot in the race to decide the country's new prime minister.

Monday marks election day across the country as Canadians will head to polls to decide who will lead the country.

In Alberta, polling stations will open at 7:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.

A record 7.3 million people cast their ballot in the advance vote.

According to the latest Nanos data to come out Monday morning, which was conducted on April 27, the race is still tight.

The survey, done exclusively for CTV News and the Globe and Mail, has the Liberals leading at 42.4 percent and the Conservatives trailing by 3.0 percent at 39.4. Figures are accurate within 2.7 percent 19 times out of 20.

Calgary’s contested ridings

In the Prairies, the Conservatives still hold about a 20 per cent lead, but there’s a few contentious ridings in Calgary.

Political analysts say Calgary Confederation, Calgary Centre, Calgary McKnight and Calgary Skyview are all ridings to watch.

According to Mount Royal University political scientist Duane Bratt, they are all up for grabs.

“I think four of them are in play. The Liberals have never won more than two seats in the city before, they have a chance at four,” said Bratt.

Bratt also points to the incredible comeback the Liberals have made on the Conservatives who held a massive lead before Donald Trump took office and Trudeau announced his resignation.

“I think really it is it is about Trump and the Trump tariffs that has led to the poll reversal, that now favours the Liberals,” said Bratt.

“The ballot box question has changed about who is best able to deal with Donald Trump.”

He also lauded the expected turnout for the election which could be north of 75 per cent.

“We haven’t had, voter turnout over 70 per cent since 1988. And I expect that is going to change today.”

338 Canada, a website that projects who will win seats based on polling, has the Liberals grabbing five seats in Alberta and 187 overall.
