Victim identified in fatal crash

The truck struck a pole 63 metres from the point of impact.

Calgary police have released the name of a woman killed in a fatal collision in the city’s southwest over the weekend.

Kelli-Jo Denise Smith, 38, of Calgary, died from fatal injuries sustained in a crash at the intersection of Sarcee Trail and Bow Trail S.W. at approximately 3:16 a.m. on Sunday.

Smith was a passenger in a truck that was heading northbound, in the left-hand lane, on Sarcee Trail approaching Bow Trail S.W. when it was hit by a 2009 Mercedes Benz.

Police say that the vehicles entered the intersection simultaneously and the Mercedes “T-Boned” the truck on its passenger side.

The truck spun out and struck a large power pole several metres from the area of impact and both occupants were ejected from the vehicle.

The Mercedes also spun out and came to rest on a grass boulevard.

The 50-year-old driver of the truck sustained serious injuries, and was transported to hospital by EMS.

Smith received fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The 27-year-old driver of the Mercedes sustained minor injuries.

Ramandeep Singh Jaswal of Calgary is charged with Impaired Driving Causing Death, Impaired Driving Causing Bodily Harm, and Refusing to Provide a Breath Sample.

Jaswal is scheduled to make his first appearance in Provincial Court on Tuesday, 2012 August 14.
