Two easy ways to unload those real Christmas trees: City of Calgary

A Calgary holiday tradition is now underway—Christmas tree composting!

The city says there are two easy ways to compost real Christmas trees.

They can be chopped up and put into green carts—just make sure the lid can still close.

If a green cart is full, paper yard waste bags, rolled closed and set two feet from the side of the cart will also do.

“Trees that are not prepared this way will not be collected,” the city said.

The other way is to bring trees to city drop-off sites between now and Jan. 31.

Either way, make sure all decorations have been removed.

“Bring your whole tree (unbagged and without decorations) to any of our 13 temporary (locations),” the city said.

Temporary locations, according to the city, include:

• Auburn Bay Off-Leash Area at 52 Street and Auburn Bay Drive S.E.;
• Bottomlands Park at Saint George’s Drive and 7 Avenue N.E. (soccer field parking lot);
• Bowness at 7937 43 Ave. N.W. (in lot behind building);
• Braeside Park at 256 Brookpark Dr. S.W.;
• Confederation Park at 905 30 Ave. N.W. (east parking lot);
• Huntington Hills Athletic Park at 7920 4 St. N.E.;
• IKEA at 8000 11 St. S.E. (northwest corner of parking lot behind store);
• Marda Loop Communities Association at 3130 16 St. S.W.;
• North Glenmore Park at 6615 37 St. S.W. (Weaselhead parking lot);
• Park 96 at 14660 Parkland Blvd S.E.;
• Pop Davies / Ogden Athletic Park at Ogden Road and Millican Road S.E.;
• Prairie Winds Park at 44 Street and 54 Avenue N.E. (south parking lot); and
• Sacramento Parks Depot at 10400 Sacramento Dr. S.W.

The city says landfill and Eco Centre locations are likewise available for free drop-off, likewise through Jan. 31.
