Terrible weather conditions in Calgary trigger fatal crash

Police are still trying to determine whether or not charges should be laid against the driver of a minivan that slid off the road and hit a man who had gotten out of his disabled truck to inspect the damage.

Calgary Police say that a driver that ran off the road on Deerfoot Trail on Monday and caused a fatal crash wasn’t breaking the speed limit, but may have been going faster than what could be reasonably maintained.

Crews were called to the scene of a crash at about noon on Monday on Deerfoot Trail near Airport Trail.

A 46-year-old man had lost control of his truck on the highway and slid into the median.

Police believe that once the driver spotted police arriving on scene, he got out of the vehicle to assess the damage to his truck.

At that point, a minivan slid off the road at the same spot and hit him.

Officers and witnesses administered CPR and paramedics rushed him to hospital where he later died.

Police are still trying to determine whether any charges should be laid against the driver of the minivan, but are convinced that excessive speed did not play into the crash.

“We don’t believe the driver was in violation of the speed limit,” said Sgt. Joerg Gottschling, with the Calgary Police Service. “The question is what a reasonable speed is today. It’s not 100 km/h the last few days.”

Northbound Deerfoot Trail was closed from north of the Beddington Trail overpass to Airport Trail for several hours following the crash.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
