Surge come out flying at WinSport but fizzle late against Shooting Stars

The Surge led early and then led late, but came up short in Target Time against the Shooting Stars, dropping a tough 106-104 loss to Scarborough at WinSport Thursday night.

With a target score of 106, playing in front of a jazzed-up crowd, Calgary appeared set to win it when they built a lead of 104-98, with a Target Time score of 106 required for the win.

But led by CEBL league-leading scorer Myles Powell, Scarborough snatched victory from the jaws of their first defeat of the season.

Powell had a bucket to cut it to 104-100. Trey Thomas poured in a three-pointer to cut it to 104-103 Calgary. And then Powell nailed a three of his own to hit the target score, giving Scarborough its fourth straight victory to start the 2026 season.

Earlier in the game, the Surge set a CEBL record, scoring 37 points in the first quarter. They were led by the return of Sean" Rugzy" Miller-Moore, who scored 13 points in seven minutes of playing time in the first quarter.

However, the Shooting Stars rallied, going on a 16-0 run of their own to take a 62-61 halftime lead.

The Surge got a strong night from Javonte Brown, who had 17 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and was named the player of the game.

Scarborough improved to 4-0 while the Surge fell to 0-4.

Next up for Calgary is a Sunday showdown in Red Deer against the Edmonton Stingers.

Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
