Southern Alberta communities choose mayors and town councils

The Town of Coaldale has banned election signs from municipally-owned property and facilities. Council said the decision came because of vandalism to election signs during the last federal election.

The communities of Banff, Coaldale, Coalhurst and Diamond Valley announced winners in their municipal elections Monday night.

In Banff, Mayor Corrie DiManno was declared elected by acclamation in September, after no contenders filed nomination papers.

Elected councillors were Michelle Backhouse, David Fullerton, Marc Ledwidge, Barb Pelham, Kaylee Ram and Brian Standish.

All the results are unofficial, with official results posted by noon on Oct. 24.

In Coaldale, Jack Van Rijn was unofficially re-elected mayor, with 1176 votes to challenger Henry Doeve’s 695.

The leading council candidates were Jason Beekman (1,384), Bill Chapman (1,185), Jacen Abrey (1,116), Dale Pickering (1,022), Lisa Reis (890) Jordan Sailer (879),

The unofficial results in Coalhurst saw Deb Florence win it with 297 votes over Scott Akkermans with 199 and Dennis Cassie with 160.

The four leading candidates for councillor were Lori Harasem (459), Colin Slingsby (440), Brody Prete (433) and Jesse Potrie (405).

In Diamond Valley, Brendan Kelly was returned as mayor without opposition.

Each community also elected a slate of councillors.

In Diamond Valley, the councillors elected were Cindy Holladay, Jonathan Gordon, Hazel Martin, Ashley Brosz, Ted Bain, Colin Fleming, Tom Kirk, Curtis Dixon and Tarina Ek.

Results will become official on Oct. 24.
