Slippery commute for drivers in Calgary

Police are advising drivers to take some extra time before they head out to work this morning after the first snowfall of the season swept in on Sunday.

Commuters were faced with slippery road conditions on Monday after the first snowfall of the season came over the weekend.

The snowfall came in on Sunday and blanketed the city with about 8-11 cm of snow.

City crews were out early laying down a salt mixture to prevent ice from building up on major roadways. They say they’ve been waiting for the first snowfall of the season.

“Our first official start of snow and ice control is in early October, so we switch all of our equipment over at that point,” said Julie Yepishina-Geller with the City Transportation Department. “So we’ve been ready for a couple of weeks now.”

Crews wil be watching the forecast closely and if the temperature drops significantly, they’ll add sand to that salt mixture.

Snowplows were also out working through the night to clear snow from city streets and major roadways.
