Province to help cover cost of specialized formula for infants with medical conditions

Effective May 1, the Alberta government is providing partial coverage to assist with the cost of a specialized amino-acid based, hypoallergenic formula for infants unable to tolerate breast milk or regular formula.

Neocate infant formula, designed for children with serious gastrointestinal medical conditions, malabsorption issues or an inability to digest typical foods, carries an average monthly cost of $690. Some families spend up to $80 a day for the formula that is not considered medicine and not covered by many insurance policies.

“Some babies have to rely on specialized infant formulas to meet their nutritional needs. But these formulas are costly, medically necessary and, in many cases, cause families considerable financial hardship,” explained Associate Health Minister Brandy Payne. “After speaking with these parents and hearing about the financial strain they are under, our government decided this coverage should be provided.”

In order to receive the benefit, families that require Neocate will need to apply for the government’s non-group coverage with a prescription from a pediatrician, a neonatologist or a pediatric gastroenterologist.

Eligible families will pay a monthly premium of between $82 and $118 and a payment of up to $25 per prescription.
