Police-involved shooting in southwest Calgary leaves one person injured

A police officer shot a man who was allegedly armed Monday afternoon in southwest Calgary. Police say the incident began as a domestic situation.

A police-involved shooting occurred in southwest Calgary on Monday afternoon.

Calgary police confirmed the incident shortly after 1 p.m.

It happened just before 1 p.m. in the 300 block of Yorkville Road S.W.

“There is no threat to public safety,” police said in the incident’s immediate aftermath.

According to police, officers were responding to a 911 hang-up “believed to be connected to a domestic incident involving a weapon occurring inside a residence.”

Police say a man fled the residence, and was located by officers nearby, in the area of 194 Avenue and Sheriff King Street S.W.

In the confrontation that followed, an officer opened fire.

The man was taken to hospital; police say his injuries are non-life-threatening.

No officers were injured.

No members of the public were injured.

“Clearly, there were other people from the community that may have witnessed something, and we’d certainly encourage those people to come forward,” said Dep. Chief Cliff O’Brien.

“Not just to come forward with information but to come forward because seeing something like this can obviously be traumatic, and we care about how they’re feeling and we want to be able to help them if we can.”

The province’s police watchdog, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, has been called in to investigate.
