Overland flooding prompts Town of Taber to declare state of emergency

A flooded ditch near Taber on March 25, 2018, On March 28, the Town of Taber declared a state of emergency in response to overland flooding concerns.

Significant flooding that could potentially impact the Town of Taber’s water treatment plant has town crews working to clear ditches and calls for residents to inspect and clear ice and debris from drains surrounding their homes.

Town councillors declared a state of emergency shortly after 6:00 p.m. Wednesday due to overland flooding in the region, specifically in the area south of the water treatment plant in the 5100 block of 40 Avenue.

The buildup of water in the vicinity of the plant continues to extend north and there are concerns the flooding could impact the building.

“This is in no way shape or form to panic any of our residents,” said Mayor Andrew Prokop. “It is simply to inform. We have crews on scene on the south side of the reservoir currently digging a trench to create further flow of the water in question near the water treatment plant and reservoir. We are attempting to create a situation where water can drain away from the water treatment infrastructure to the west of our town reservoir."

“The flooding has not yet affected our water treatment plant and our staff will be monitoring the situation at the plant 24/7 to ensure the safety of our water supply.”

The state of emergency is expected to remain in effect until the overland flooding subsides.

"If the water rolls higher and got into the water treatment plant infrastructure we could have a major problem on our hands related to the normal treatment of our water supply."
