Over 5K runners participate in Mother’s Day Walk and Run in Calgary

Thousands of Calgarians ran to raise money for neonatal intensive care units at Calgary hospitals and Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. Tyler Barrow reports.

Thousands of runners, walkers and strollers celebrated Mother’s Day by going for a Sunday run in south Calgary at the 49th annual Sport Chek Mother’s Day run.

“It’s become an institution where people get out and move before they go out for brunch and other things,” said Run Calgary’s Kirsten Fleming.

“It’s just such a wonderful way to celebrate family and community.”

Kailin Meeuwise was at the event with her son Grayson, who is eight.

“This is something I grew up doing with my family. We would run almost every year as kids with my parents and now I’m restarting the tradition with my oldest – so we’re running together the 5K,” said Meeuwise.

“Being able to stay active and run with my family is such a special memory because it’s something I grew up doing with my family.”

“We’re just really excited to get out, be active and run a fun race and support an amazing cause.”

Jasdeep Minhas was there to spend time with her mom and sisters, get some exercise and enjoy the weather.

“We started doing it because one of our dearly loved ones, my cousin, passed away from breast cancer in 2024– so it’s to raise money for the Calgary Health Foundation as well as the ability to spend time together for Mother’s Day," Minhas said.

Over 5,200 people raised over $30,000 for two different charities.
