The Port of Windsor’s Harbour Master is reminding boaters to be prepared, after a boat capsized near Peche Island Saturday afternoon. Peter Berry said the incident, involving two people in their 50s, showed the importance of not only having a lifejacket but wearing it. “I think the important thing is the two people who were involved there had their lifejackets on the most definitely saved their lives,” Berry said. Between the strong current and the weather, Berry said the situation could’ve turned tragic had the pair not had life jackets. Windsor police said Sunday the boaters were clinging to the vessel after it overturned in the water. Both people were treated by Essex-Windsor EMS at the scene for minor injuries. “They wouldn’t have had much opportunity or chance had they not had their lifejackets on and not to mention the cold water as well would eventually take you,” Berry explained. Members of the Windsor Police Service Marine Unit were able to rescue the boaters after being notified by people who happened to be in the area. “See something, say something is very important in the river, whether it be a search and rescue, like we had yesterday, or it could be criminal activity,” he added. Over the warmer months, the Detroit River is a busy spot for recreational boaters eager to enjoy the weather. After the capsizing early in the season, Berry wants other boaters to prepare a plan before they hit the water. “Eyes up, stay sober, wear your life jackets, have a plan, and ensure you have all your safety equipment aboard,” Berry said. A key part of preparation, he explained, is monitoring the weather before going out. Water temperatures can still be frigid for anyone who falls in, and the weather can change in a short period. Other tips for boaters, include notifying family members before going out, and keeping a radio on the boat. He said they should also keep a bailer, a rope, and a whistle aboard.
