Okotoks RCMP officer fires gun during confrontation; ASIRT investigating

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating an incident in Okotoks on Wednesday that saw an RCMP officer fire their gun.

Mounties were called to a home on Patterson Road just after 2 p.m. to check on the well being of a man outside the residence.

“Upon arrival, officers began communicating with the suspect,” RCMP said in a Thursday news release. “A confrontation occurred resulting in an officer discharging their service pistol.”

Backup was called, and RCMP were able to get the suspect to surrender with the help of a negotiator.

“At this time, it was discovered that the suspect was injured,” RCMP stated.

The suspect is expected to recover, Mounties said.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is now investigating the incident.

RCMP are also conducting an internal review independent of ASIRT’s investigation to gather a full account of what took place.
