Calgary Transit is adding three new light rail vehicles to its CTrain fleet, marking the first expansion of its train lineup in six years. The new C10 vehicles — also known as “Mask” LRVs due to their design — are expected to begin service this week. Transit officials say the additions are part of a broader effort to modernize the system and improve reliability as older trains are phased out. “The new C10s, or Mask LRVs, give CTrain riders modern amenities such as heated floors, onboard digital displays, air conditioning and improved accessibility,” said Sharon Fleming, director of Calgary Transit. Fleming added the new vehicles are expected to be more reliable and cost less to maintain than the aging U2 trains they are replacing. The three new LRVs will join 69 C9 model trains already in operation. Calgary Transit’s fleet includes 217 light rail vehicles, with 32 of those being older U2 cars nearing the end of their service life. Mayor Jeromy Farkas said the new trains represent a step forward for the city’s transit system. “These new C10 cars mean a more reliable, more comfortable transit system for each and every Calgarian who relies on it,” he said. The new vehicles are part of a phased rollout that will see 37 additional C10 LRVs introduced over the next two and a half years. The transition is expected to allow Calgary Transit to fully retire its remaining U2 trains by 2028.
