McLellan to stay on as Calgary chief through mid-2028: police commission

Police Chief Katie McLellan is staying on until mid-2028, the Calgary Police Commission announced Wednesday in a news release.

“Over the past year, Chief McLellan has led with steadiness, care and integrity through a demanding and complex period for policing in Calgary,” said police commission chair Amtul Siddiqui.

“She has shown heart and humility and has earned the respect and confidence of the people she serves every day,” Siddiqui added. “We have heard from employees and the community alike that her leadership has made a meaningful difference — not only in direction and decision‑making, but in how people feel heard, respected and supported."

“Chief McLellan has proven herself over what has amounted to a year‑long interview,” Siddiqui said. “Retaining her allows her to finish the work she has started, and continue to set a strong course for policing in Calgary.”

Siddiqui said McLellan has dealt with public safety concerns, budget decisions and recruitment and training initiatives since taking over from Mark Neufeld last May, after Neufeld retired abruptly with two years remaining on his contract.

“I’m grateful for the trust placed in me and proud to continue serving Calgary as chief,” said McLellan. “This role comes with enormous responsibility.

“The past year has been both challenging and deeply meaningful,” she added. “I am proud of the dedication shown by our sworn and civilian members, and I remain committed to leading the service with integrity, accountability and a strong focus on community safety.”
