Lethbridge Police target crime, social disorder in core

Lethbridge police say they’re cracking down on crime and social disorder in the southern Alberta city’s core.

According to police, they’ve beefed up resources along 2 Avenue A North, extending several blocks in all directions after reviewing police data and feedback from local businesses.

This is being done based on “CompStat data supported by feedback from businesses.”

The force says complaints and calls for service in that area have picked up in recent months.

So far this month, police say officers have addressed 120 incidents of open drug use, executed 67 outstanding warrants and dismantled 34 encampments.

Police say two “prolific” fentanyl dealers were arrested, as was a repeat drug trafficker.

They say six shoplifters were also arrested.

Forty-four Criminal Code charges were laid.

Ten Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act and public spaces bylaw violation tickets were issued.

“These resources provide both overt and covert policing, supplementing the service’s existing targeted enforcement strategy,” police said in a release issued Tuesday.

“The enhanced presence is focused on preventing crime, improving public safety and holding offenders accountable.”
