Kootenay National Park survey shows record number of endangered bird species

A new survey of British Columbia’s Kootenay National Park shows a record number of black swifts, an endangered bird species.

Parks Canada reviews the ecosystems at the park every year.

Species like black swifts are monitored closely to better understand their population dynamics and needs.

According to a social media post from Kootenay National Park, the survey this year saw 26 of the birds recorded at Marble Canyon, the most ever seen in the park.

Black swifts are migratory birds that travel far and wide for food.

Parks Canada says they build their nests in cool, moist areas on steep canyon walls.

“These conditions help slow chick metabolism, allowing them to go longer without food and provide refuge from predators,” said a social media post.

The birds are monogamous, and females usually lay only one egg per season.
