The Kids Help Phone is teaming up with Southcentre Mall to remind youth it’s okay to reach out if you need support. On Wednesday, the organization launched a special setup at the mall to make sure students know where to turn if they need someone to talk to. The display gives youth the opportunity to write a note to their future selves, which they can mail. The letter will then be mailed back to them on June 20, 2027. Ava Waugh from the Kids Help Phone Foundation says it’s a great opportunity for youth to reflect on their feelings. “As we know, back-to-school can bring up a whole lot of emotions – some people might be excited, other people might be nervous. There might be fears about maybe seeing a bully or academic pressure – and so we want young people to know that Kids Help Phone is always here, always open and always free. “We’re completely confidential, so young people can call or text us at any time, 24 hours a day.” Waugh says they’re seeing a strong increase in the demand for overnight texting service. “In the first half of 2026 – compared to the first half of 2025 – Alberta saw a 29 per cent increase,” she said. “Back-to-school is a really important time of year. We routinely see a surge in demand. Last year we saw a 10 per cent increase compared to the year before, and we’re expecting the same this year.” To call the Kids Help Phone, dial 1-800-668-6868.
